I saw the movie over Memorial Day. I was also thankfully caught by surprise by the plot twist.
I'm still undecided whether I liked the overall movie or not. I really enjoyed the 2009 film, but this one was composed of so many re-engineered plots that I'm not sure how I feel. It felt like a Geoff Johns reworking of continuity to fit new ideas. This was Space Seed, Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock (with the ships crashing), Undiscovered Country (Bones operating on torpedoes), and other little tidbits. It was certainly fun and adventurous and had some great acting and a few brilliant moments, but I'm not sure I was wowed by the story. Here I sit a week after seeing it and I'm still undecided. I guess that should tell me that I'm not 100% in love with this movie. I would be really interested in hearing the opinion of a Star Trek newbie. Someone without 30+ years of continuity stuffed into his bald head (yes, I'm talking about me, not Ed). I wonder whether they would like this movie, totally missing all the references to previous media.
