To Jon: Hi, i think your problem is not with SPhinx, it's with your shared-hosting server. In shared hosting, you are not allow to run any daemon. I can't find any shared-hosting that allows you to run daemon. So the solution for using Sphinx or Other search engine like Lucene, you need at least VPS or dedicated server.
