Hi Jon, Chamroeun The shared host theory sounds good - although if the process is still running when connections die, then I'm not convinced that's the cause. And besides - Jon hasn't mentioned whether he's on a shared host or not.
Beyond that, though - I'd be interested to know whether you can run the 'search' command-line tool (that comes with Sphinx) to run a query against searchd, just to confirm the issue is outside of Ruby. If it is, perhaps it's worth asking this question on the Sphinx forum? http://sphinxsearch.com/forum/ I must admit, I'm not really sure what the cause could be... I'm guessing the server isn't running out of resources?
