If the disks are powered down and the LCD display is off, then you could leave it on for months with no ill effects, *if* the battery is out. Absolutely no company does really correct battery charging, so if the unit is on for a long time the battery is going to die. The one time I really managed to remember to keep the battery out when on stable AC power I got two years of life out of it, as opposed to my usual one year. If you are in a cold place, leaving the unit on means that you avoid the thermal stress of powering it up. The only problem there is that if its really cold and you have the disks on you can create problems that way.
