The battery is trickle-charged when you are using AC power.  If you use the
laptop for long periods of time and never use the battery, you will find that
the battery doesn't have as much life as it should, after say half a year or
so.  I've seen this at work too, between those who use their laptops as
portable desktops vs. mobile units powered by their battery.
