I think RayBay puts you in the right direction for the optical drive problem.

For installing W2K, you could as well just copy the complete directory /i386/
that contains all installation files onto the harddisk, and then use any 
bootable floppy or CD (W98, DOS or other) to start the install from that 
directory. No further need for the W2K CD afterwards.

I quite like W2K and prefer it to XP in some respect and for older machines, 
but a T23 is quite recent and well capable of XP. However, to revert to 
W2K _JUST_ for the HP printer driver issue seems a bit over the top, 
doesn't it?

Why not install the XP drivers in the proper way for the HP printer? While 
there seems to be an issue with XP drivers for the PSC500 series, there are 
clear instructions from HP support on how to go about it. Is that workaround 
really not working?
