If you know the chipset that the card is using, there is a good chance that 
you can find drivers for it from the chipset manufacturer that will work 
fine.  We've done this with a couple of net cards: something wasn't right 
with the drivers from the manufacturer, but the generic drivers from the 
company worked a treat.  You might need a Chinese->English translation 
plugin for your browser.

There are also hacked drivers for some cards out there which have software 
limits on the transmission power to meet FCC standards; these hacks can 
sometimes greatly increase the range (at a cost of battery life on your 
laptop).
