I'm very happy with Apricorn enclosures. They are usually sold bare, IIRC. I don't recall ever needing an AC adapter to use it. The cable used is also a typical A to B USB printer cable.
I think that LaCie uses a mini-A connector. Sometimes, I like using a cable with one mini-A and two A connectors. One A will provide data (and power?), and the other is dedicated to providing power. I would rather use the enclosure on its own myself.
