For the record, I'm happy to report that the LaCie mobile hard drive, 320GB, USB 2.0 (LAC1138) is happy to start and run with just a USB cable connected to a T43.
The drive has arrived, and I have tested it on my T43. The HDD inside is a Hitachi Travelstar 5K320 HTS543232L9A300. Thanks to everyone who responded to my question about this.
