Do a google on swapping drives, as I recall you need to download a driver package onto the drive. I think it is the IDE controllers that screw it up.

Subject: [Thinkpad] Hard drive swap from T30 into T40

Hello Group,

I posted here about a month ago asking if I could physically swap the hard
drive from a T30 into a T40 without other modifications (BIOS, etc). I
finally got back around to that project and discovered the answer is "No". Both machines are running XPP. The T30 drive is a 160gb Western Digital Scorpio.
The T40 drive is a Seagate Momentus 80gb.

After swapping the drives I turn on the T40 and get a blue screen that
informs me there was a hardware or software change. Next a screen appears that gives me options to boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode
with command prompt, boot with last know good configuration, or start
windows normally. No matter what option I select (and I tried them all) the blue
screen pops back up then the boot options screen.

Can anyone offer advice as to how to get around this. I need to get the
data and programs from the 160gb T30 drive (which is only 40% full) so it can be used in the T40, with everything intact. I don't have the original XP CD's
as both machines were bought second-hand, but I do have recovery disks for
the T30 if that helps. As always your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Mike Williams
