OK, I finally have a result! And Bruce nailed it again. This time I restored the HD one partition at a time, but including (for the first time) the recovery partition. Reboot failed as expected, but I then ran BootIt NG. When I tried to look at the Properties of the IBM_PRELOAD partition, an error message appeared, saying that there was a bad BPT (or something similar) and did I want it fixed. I did, and it fixed it. The following reboot worked, for the first time.
Thanks again, Bruce! Acronis support has apparently given up on me completely. Perhaps I should tell them how I (or should I say Bruce) fixed the problem.
