Just send money. Tech support is expensive.

OK, I finally have a result! And Bruce nailed it again.

This time I restored the HD one partition at a time, but including (for the first time) the recovery partition. Reboot failed as expected, but I then ran BootIt NG. When I tried to look at the Properties of the IBM_PRELOAD partition, an error message appeared, saying that there was a bad BPT (or something similar) and did I want it fixed. I did, and it fixed it. The following reboot worked, for the first time.

Thanks again, Bruce! Acronis support has apparently given up on me completely. Perhaps I should tell them how I (or should I say Bruce) fixed the problem.

This has been covered before and you may be able to find something in the archives. It seems to have to do with the partition table not being right, and you can fix it with a small program called boot it NG, or something like that. You just boot from it (using a USB floppy) and tell it to repair and replace the MBR a few times and MAGIC the new drive works.

Subject: [Thinkpad] Backup-recovery software for T61

This is a little off-topic, but perhaps not too much.

I've been using Acronis True Image for backup and recovery of my T61 (and previous TPs) for many years, but I've never seen a failure like the one I'm now experiencing. My primary HD developed a bad sector, causing backups to fail. I was able to repair the sector without apparent damage to anything, but had Lenovo send me a replacement HD anyway. That's when the "fun" began.

I made a backup of the primary HD to an external USB HD (a disk I always use) using True Image. When I rebooted from the True Image rescue disk, the primary HD could not be seen. It took a few tries with Acronis support, but they finally understood my problem and linked me to a more recent version which was able to see the primary. I backed up again and did what True Image rescue told me was a successful restore, only to find that the reboot fails (hangs) with the cursor flashing in the upper left corner. That's the situation which has held since the end of August. All I can say is, thank goodness I have a working HD.

I have two questions. Has anyone else experienced such a failure to recover on a Thinkpad? And what alternative backup software are others using on their Thinkpads? Obviously, it's possible that Lenovo shipped a bad replacement, but Acronis has yet to suggest anything like that.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Mike
