You just boot to it from a floppy. No need to do any kind of an install. It "installs" when you boot to it, but not really. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Stack" <[email protected]>

An interesting idea to test, but I'm not clear how I'll be able to access two drives at the same time.

I've upgraded my copy of BootIt NG to v1.86a but haven't yet tried it. I don't want to "install" BootIt NG, and I can't yet see how to have it do anything without being installed, but it's a new HD so anything goes. I'll try it shortly.

I did an Acronis true image (9) clone of my X31 hard drive last night. Worked perfectly the first time. Rather than do backups, I just keep a cloned hard drive on hand and update it from time to time.

This is a little off-topic, but perhaps not too much.

I've been using Acronis True Image for backup and recovery of my T61 (and previous TPs) for many years, but I've never seen a failure like the one I'm now experiencing. My primary HD developed a bad sector, causing backups to fail. I was able to repair the sector without apparent damage to anything, but had Lenovo send me a replacement HD anyway. That's when the "fun" began.

I made a backup of the primary HD to an external USB HD (a disk I always use) using True Image. When I rebooted from the True Image rescue disk, the primary HD could not be seen. It took a few tries with Acronis support, but they finally understood my problem and linked me to a more recent version which was able to see the primary. I backed up again and did what True Image rescue told me was a successful restore, only to find that the reboot fails (hangs) with the cursor flashing in the upper left corner. That's the situation which has held since the end of August. All I can say is, thank goodness I have a working HD.

I have two questions. Has anyone else experienced such a failure to recover on a Thinkpad? And what alternative backup software are others using on their Thinkpads? Obviously, it's possible that Lenovo shipped a bad replacement, but Acronis has yet to suggest anything like that.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Mike
