Hello,
I search the archives and found a message I sent about the 600 DVD Drives to
jog my memory. I ran into this problem and had to buy a newer drive and swap
the plastic pieces.
If it is the 600 2x DVD then it does not recognize DVD-R.
If it is the 600 6x DVD then it does read DVD-R but has problems with DVD-RW.
FWIW, I have a 600X with the 6x DVD drive. Mine never read any
recordable DVD, even when it was brand new. If you don't need to boot (a
600 series) from it, I suggest an external drive. Otherwise, a new
internal drive from a third party.

When you say that you "popped in a dvd drive", do you mean
you put in one of the DVD drives that originally came with
the 600 series? At this point, those drives would be at least
10 years old. And they were not that great to begin with. In
particular, many of them had problems reading dual-layer DVDs
and they could be pretty finnicky about CD-RWs.
To eliminate the drive and disk as potential culprits, you
should replace the drive with a newer (new within the last
year or three) drive, and you should use a freshly burnt,
single-layer, CD-R (not CD-RW).
Phil.
