Anyone who configures a lot of systems will tell you that it is a whole lot easier to use the recovery disc and remove what you don't want than to do a clean install, activate the software, and get everything working with machine specific drivers. Especially because one T400 is not always the same as another T400, there is different stuff inside and you wind up doing the parts lookup by FRU number to try to figure out the wifi adaptor, modem, display etc. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Matthews" <[email protected]> To: "Bruce Markowitz" <[email protected]>; "STeve Andre'" <[email protected]>; <[email protected]>

The problem is that if you don't use the IBM supplied software, you may
have a hard time getting the OS to work properly. I have recently done
some installs where I have to use the update connector to get all the
drivers, what a PITA and it takes hours.

Sure, though this goes both ways -- ie, you can take Lenovo's install, and
figure out what to remove -- or you can clean install, and figure out what
to add -- personally, the latter strikes me as a better fit (especially now that newer OS'es tend to be much more compatible with the default drivers as compared to the situation with older OS'es) -- but I certainly respect that
others will prefer other solutions.

Since Lenovo doesn't tell you what they changed, it's pretty hard to know
what to change back -- plus, I don't trust "uninstallation" to really remove
everything...
