If your external monitor turns off along with the LCD, then it's definitely a 
GPU issue.

Thanks. In that thread Stuart reported they replaced the LCD and the cable. His 
problem must have been different from mine, since on my T42 the display turns 
off on the LCD *and* the external monitor, whether they're running in tandem or 
separately. So it couldn't be the LCD, and if it were in the cable I don't 
think it would affect the external monitor. 
 
If this is caused by the infamous T4x graphics chip solder fracture, as Chris 
suggested, then it's yet another manifestation of that problem, in addition to 
the other symptoms I've read about.
