Thanks Rob,

I had hidden and system set to be shown in WE but didn't see it.

dir /ah from c:\> shows pagefile.sys but not hiberfil.sys

I think it's Vista and Seven that automatically delete when you
disable hibernation, so I may have confused myself about that, but
this is XP and it should be there as you say.

For a moment I wondered if the forever hibernation was actually
failing before, but there was tons of fragmented free space (47% of
250GB drive) and anyway the restore from hibernation was always
successful.

I ran MyDefrag (JKDefrag) on "Optimize Monthly" for about 18 hours and
it got to about 80% of Zone 6 before we had to use the machine. The
docs say it's safe to stop it at any time, and we did. I thought that
while it would have to start at square 1 for rigour, that it would get
to that same "80% of Zone 6" relatively quickly since we only used the
machine for a couple of hours.

Last night I started it up in Monthly again and this morning it was at
40% of Zone 4. It's discouraging to think a couple of hours' work
would have triggered such extensive re-optimizing, especially since we
had to use it for a couple of hours this morning.

This morning, I started MyDefrag again and did a Daily optimize (less
thorough). It's still looking to be on target for a very long run and
I know it won't get to the end before we need the machine again.

I'll reserve judgement until we actually start with an optimized
drive, but at this rate I'm thinking Optimize Monthly should be
Optimize Yearly, maybe over Christmas and Boxing Day! :(

BTW I did turn off MSE (and closed all apps) during the optimization
as the docs suggested.
