While I agree that it might be a good time to start shopping for a newer 
machine, I wouldn't shy away from fixing that one if it were mine. If one 
purchases a board from a trustworthy source, it's likely to last another few 
years, and that's one splendid "classic ThinkPad" backup you'd have there...

My $0.02 only....

Tx for the clues, especially regarding video ram being the likely culprit.  
einstalling the video driver only corrected corruption in the settings and did 
ot fix the issue.  I'll run a longer PC doc test, but I'm reasonably certain 
t's time to shop for a replacement machine.  Spare system boards _may_ be 
vailable, but they will be old parts also famous for a different graphics chip 
ssue.
