Are you seeing anything on the screen at all, or is it totally dark? If it is dark you may want to try hooking it up to an external monitor to see if you have a display problem.

If the HD doesn't really do anything, there may be a problem there. One way to check the overall health of the system is to create a boot CD (look up "Linux live CD" on Google) and boot up with that. Using that you can test all other parts of the system to determine whether the HD is the main failure point.

I'm sure others will have more ideas too...
