The Air laptops have had failure rates among several friends that lead
me to believe they run too hot.
Current Intel/AMD CPUs are disgusting little heat pigs, despite the more
recent Intel CPU's being a lot better. In the case of my 2.8G core 2 W500,
the bottom gets pretty hot. Take that "mobile" CPU and stuff it into a
smaller case, and the heat dissipates over a smaller area, and thus is
hotter. David's idea about underclocking is a good one.
It would be better if the there were an actual indo-skeleton in the TP
such that the entire case was a heat sink, but that costs money and
Lenovo, just like everyone else is scrabbling for market share.

Thanks for the pointer, but aren't Apple's Air laptops fanless?

Modern CPUs run hot. Your best bet is to underclock, and run a
thinkpad fan control program like
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tp4xfancontrol/

Subject: [Thinkpad] Thinkpad quality, but with no fan?
Hi all,
I've been buying Thinkpads dating back to the 600. My biggest gripe
with my most recent, an X61s, is how hot it gets -- and then how
loud it gets when the fan comes on.
I generally get thin/light laptops, preferably with no optical
drive. I've always liked the Thinkpad keyboard and Trackpoint.
Is it possible to get a Thinkpad quality laptop, but with no fan?
Thanks, -Scott
