You can get 1 watt or higher USB wifi adapters for a very low price
nowadays. Here's one for around $20 including shipping:

or search eBay for RTL8187L. Even 500mW will perform much better than any
internal or pcmcia card.
Or, if you want to try a bridge, I recommend the ASUS WL-330gE as it has
other functions (eg, as a portable travel router or even wifi adapter). I
use mine quite a lot.
