I wrote back to confirm which address they used (it was "B" because
signature required). Today I received shipment notification. It
appears they're replacing the whole kit (78Y1147) which would be my
second choice because if they really want the bad one back, it's more
work.

I just initiated a service call on an adapter (no doubt your posts infected my computer with adapteritis), and my service guy says they'll want the bad adapter back. This is a bit of a change from the old days, when they treated adapters as consumables and never wanted the bad ones back.
