I've noticed a strange issue popping up when transferring large amounts of
data. Anything more than 1gb in files (regardless if it is lots of smaller
files or few larger files), the transfer rate slows significantly.

Initially, I'll get 25mb/s or so in transfer speed, but it will slow to
1-2mb/s as the transfer progresses.

The slowdown in transfer speed is predictable. At 1gb, it will suddenly
slow; but then it will also only slow to 10mb/s to 15mb/s. As it continues
to progress, there is a gradual decline in the speed.

I've had the same issue on several different platforms (T400, T410, T60,
and T61p) and with different OS (WinXP Pro, W7Pro, and Ubuntu).

I am not sure if this is a hardware or software issue, or both for that
matter.

The system I am using now is a T61p running Ubuntu 10.04 (64bit). I have a
500gb HD and 8gb of ram.

Any similar experiences? And hopefully a solution?

Thanks,
Jace

That is really weird. Given the software complexities of USB, having
three OS's do the same thing makes me think its hardware. Have
you tried a different disk? Thats quite a slowdown. Hmm. Since
you are saying it happens with 4 different thinkpads, it sounds
more and more like hardware. Are you going through a usb hub
of some kind? I'd take a hard look at the hardware.

The other possibility is one of the SMART related options in the
disk is on, and messing things up? I am now convinced that
SMART implementations on some disks have bugs, like not
sleeping correctly. Anyway, try different hardware, including
usb cables.
