On almost any other ThinkPad, I'd be looking at software as well...but with T61/p and well-documented nVidia problem associated with them, I'd be willing to bet that we have already identified the culprit...

Gads. Testing the machine with another op system is a good idea, but I know a t60 which had problems under Windows, that some Linux ran OK on. Getting to the depot repair place, they determined that the system boards disk controller was flaky.
