Samsung and Western Digital both make a 1TB 9.5mm laptop HD. There will
almost certainly be multi TB 9.5mm HDs available before the W520 reaches the
end of its useful life.

Are you certain of this? Usually docking stations have a pass-thru of the
laptop's USB ports and not a separate card, ergo if the docked laptop is
USB3.0 so are the ports on the docking station, and vice versa. This is an
oft visited question with docking stations, especially years ago when some
of them supported both USB1.1 and USB2.0 equipped machines and, as the docks
were listed as USB2.0 compliant, many users of older machines were
distressed to find that their USB1.1 laptops didn't miraculously become
USB2.0 capable when docked.
