Lenovo's forum is a great place to do one's research...and threads regarding 
nVidia failures on T61/p and R61 are long ones indeed...

If your friend is interested in a sizable machine, I happen to have a R61e with 
safe Intel X3100 graphics and T7300 Core 2 Duo sitting and doing nothing...
