Thanks Dave, I remembered that, but I don't run Windows on my
thinkpads. I briefly considered rousting around for my original
Windows disk, but couldn't find it. Just now I have all the data
for all ThinkPads spread over each laptop so I won't forget.

Steve,
As far as loosing track of your model (etal) numbers, add them to the
"Support Information" when you [Right click] "My Computer" "Properties".

This info is generally found in a simple INI text file "OEMINFO.INI" located
in your Windows/System 32 folder.

Just be careful and add your info to the file following the existing syntax
of the file as a guide (works just like most plain vanilla ini config files.

Subject: [Thinkpad] Stunningly unhelpful EZ-SERV call, and docking madness

I'm curious if others are seeing a downturn in the quality of calls to
the Atlanta folks?

I've gotten myself into a stupid situation. A friend here at MSU had
some spare docking stations, and I asked if I could try some out to see if
they fit on my W500. They did! So now I have two of them for work and
home. .....Except that the docking station does not want to come off. My
friend does not have the keys for them.
I've been looking at it and see how to destroy it, but I really don't want
to do that. Looking online I saw evidence that keys can be gotten, so that
was comforting.

But I've never seen a docking system were you could dock a laptop with
the station in the locked position. I'm hardly an expert on them but that
doesn't make much sense. So I called the ezserv number and the first thing
the person on the line wants is my 4 digit code. Seeing as the docking
station is nicely covering the bottom of my laptop, I can't read it. I have
apparently misplaced my file of thinkpad data, so I don't have my machine
type, or s/n.

The person said that there was NO WAY for him to get this kind of
information. None. Without the machine type he would do nothing. I said
that was idiotic, and asked to speak to his supervisor.
He wouldn't. I was put on ignore for about 20 seconds, and he then said
that the supervisor agreed with him.

Now I *know* this is false. I've gotten data on ThinkPads, especially
when traveling and was away from users when I needed to help them, or query
about one in the repair depot when I did not have all the data with me.
After asking why he couldn't do what they've done in the past, he hung up on
me.

In all my years of using Thinkpads (since the 700C), I have never gotten
this response. Is IBM/Lenovo going to hell? Do they have new "modern"
software that is inflexible or is it the people?

Lenovo, if anyone there is reading this, I want to talk with you about
this. Email me. I'm going to figure out where in the maze of IBM/Lenovo I
need to send a complaint to, but someone calling me would be best. If
anyone on the list has had to send in a complaint and knows where to start,
that would be cool, too.

Thinking a little, it dawned on me that the PDFs of books on ThinkPads
would help, and I found what I'm sure is my machine type, 4062. Armed with
this I got to Atlanta again, where a nice
*competent* person heard me, and rather than demand the machine type, told
me of itxchange.com and gave me their number, (877) 426-4533. This person
was as helpful as the first one useless.

I still don't know about the status of the docking station. The lock is
vertical and the little lock status on the left side of the dock is red, so
I am hoping that I haven't jammed my ThinkPad on the dock and hurt it.

I'll be calling the xchange people tomorrow...
