yes the drive is good, it's just the 
drivers in the troubled Windows XP
that are compromised.

IBM rescue and recovery will not work for the previously suggested method. You 
need a retail disk.

Can you boot anything - a "live" CD or whatever - from that media drive using 
F12 to choose it as a
temporary boot device?

1-I have no Windows CD but do have the 

IBM "Rescue and Recovery CD" Will this
