IBM rescue and recovery will not work for the previously suggested method. You 
need a retail disk.

Can you boot anything - a "live" CD or whatever - from that media drive using 
F12 to choose it as a temporary boot device?

OK good thought.  Issues: 
 
1-I have no Windows CD but do have the 
  IBM "Rescue and Recovery CD"  Will this 
  work? 
 
2-The device will no longer recognize the 
  CD drive as noted in earlier message.
