Wanted to pass along thanks on this one:

- New fan is installed with far quieter operation

- Used a better cover of Arctic Silver for thermal grease

- Went with a Core 2 Duo CPU so the processor is faster; going to
attempt an x64 install tonight and see if it makes even more difference.

That does sound like a fan past its prime.

FRUs that you should be looking for are 41V9932 (old version) or 41W6407
(new version).

BTW, you can install a Core 2 Duo CPU in that machine to give it a facelift
and get it to run both faster and cooler. Search eBay for T5500/5600 or
T7200/7400/7600.

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

Subject: [Thinkpad] T60p Fan Error

Hi all,

Got a 2007-83U T60p that started to report a Fan Error as part of the BIOS
boot cycle. I've popped off the keyboard and wrist rest and see that the
fan is there, spins up as part of the initial power up but then stops
itself. my guess is that the fan itself is close to death and the initial
spin up is part of a death rattle.

Looking for cheap suggestions on this, if it's even possible to fix. as it's

a Core Duo (not a Core 2, so x86 only) which makes it somewhat elderly.
don't know if this is a fan issu, since it spins on power up, or if it's a
sensor issue, in which case pricy to fix.

If y'all think it is a defective fan, does anyone have the part(s) to sell?

Thanks,

Randy
