One more thing. I put Thunderbird in work offline mode and the
following errors popped up in the error console:

HttpComms3.js: callback : Exception : NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE.
Error message: Component returned failure code: 0x80040111
(NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE) [nsIHttpChannel.responseStatus]
697

Hotmail-SR-BETA: MailboxOnload : Exception : NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE.
Error message: Component returned failure code: 0x80040111
(NS_ERROR_NOT_AVAILABLE) [nsIHttpChannel.responseStatus]
459

Hotmail-SR-BETA: serverComms : Exception : NS_BASE_STREAM_CLOSED.
Error message: Component returned failure code: 0x80470002
(NS_BASE_STREAM_CLOSED) [nsIOutputStream.write]
1318

When I go back on line, these errors disappear.
