On my Hotmail account, if I send a plain text message from Thunderbird, 
it's delivered as plain text, I just checked. This may not be typical 
though as my account is WebDav enabled so the extension doesn't need to 
go through Hotmail's website. I understand your problem though, on lists 
that I moderate I have seen members apparently post blanks when posting 
from the Hotmail website. By default Hotmail composes HTML only mail, 
some Yahoo groups remove all non text content, leaving a blank mail.
Anyway you could try adding the list address to your TB address book, 
then in Properties for the address book entry select "Prefers to receive 
mail as" to plain text.
