I have had a few people who have contacted me to say to change the
localhost name in the hotmail server settings in ThunderBird to
127.0.0.1.
The only difference this has made is I now I get:

"An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server 127.0.0.1
responded: "

  :-)

I have now made the hotmail account separate.
What makes me puzzled is that it did work once but now stubbornly
refuses to do so. Everything looks ok.
I have also set up this pop account (local o2) in hotmail via the
web so as to get its mail in hotmail.
I wonder if there is something on the hotmail server interacting
changing its state and stopping this working now.
I may reset the Hotmail account so that it is not able to receive
emails from the local o2 pop( remotely from Hotmail) to see if this is
the cause.

Or has o2 reset something when I downloaded so many emails?

Puzzling.
