At last!
I have now resolved the problem. First I mixed up the port numbers of the pop, smtp, imap and they didn't tie up with those of the configuration of the hotmail account i.e. POP and SMTP. That's why the pop server failed straight away. So I put all the webmail servers ports into the 2000 mark. ie 2025, 2110, 2143 and made sure they corresponded with those in the hotmail account. configurations. I also made sure that the "leave messages on server until I delete them" was ticked "on" in the "account settings/server settings" as I noted it defaulted to delete. In passing I found the logging files option useful too. (set to Enable the logging option box on the "add-ons/webmail/options/logging tab"). There was loads of files to browse through when it started to work.
