I recall having a problem with a similar error message some time ago, in this case it was the use of certain non-alphanumeric characters in the subject of the mail caused the problem. I can't remember which mail system this was on, or even whether it was an account that used the extensions however. Are you tied to using the extensions? Hotmail now provides free POP and SMTP servers. You may not be able to use Hotmail's servers if you are behind a firewall that blocks the ports used, or you may want to download mails from subfolders of your inbox on the Hotmail site. The POP protocol only allows retrieving of mail from the server's inbox. However if your Internet connection allows access to the Hotmail POP and SMTP servers and you don't want to download mail from subfolders, then using Hotmail's own servers rather than the extensions will be more dependable.
