Hmmmm ... interesting. I hadn't heard that Hotmail had relented and
enabled POP3 and SMTP :-)
It certainly works :-)
Though for Thunderbird the settings
recommended by M$ are not quite right --- I found that they say for the
SMTP side to use
SSL on port 25.
I found that that didn't work - however TLS did!
POP --- pop3.live.com Port=995 Use SSL
SMTP --- smtp.live.com Port=25 Use TLS
YMMV
Thanks all for the prompt help.
In many ways it's a shame M$ has done this because I know a lot of
effort has gone into tracking the M$ web site over the years - thanks
guys.

I recall having a problem with a similar error message some time ago, in
this case it was the use of certain non-alphanumeric characters in the
subject of the mail caused the problem. I can't remember which mail
system this was on, or even whether it was an account that used the
extensions however.
Are you tied to using the extensions? Hotmail now provides free POP and
SMTP servers. You may not be able to use Hotmail's servers if you are
behind a firewall that blocks the ports used, or you may want to
download mails from subfolders of your inbox on the Hotmail site. The
POP protocol only allows retrieving of mail from the server's inbox.
However if your Internet connection allows access to the Hotmail POP and
SMTP servers and you don't want to download mail from subfolders, then
using Hotmail's own servers rather than the extensions will be more
dependable.

Are you sure the account SMTP settings are correct and the POP
account has the correct SMTP server selected.
Hotmail A/C #1 (working - I'm replying with this account) :-
SMTP settings :-
Description "Hotmail SMTP (Softfoot)
Name: "localhost"
Port: "1125"
User Name: "[email protected]"
Secure Connection: "None"
Webmail SMTP setting :-
Outgoing Server (SMTP): "Hotmail SMTP (Softfoot) - localhost"
Hotmail A/C #2 :- (can receive mail but CANNOT SEND!)
SMTP settings :-
Description "Hotmail SMTP (Xxx)
Name: "localhost"
Port: "1125"
User Name: "[email protected]"
Secure Connection: "None"
Webmail SMTP setting :-
Outgoing Server (SMTP): "Hotmail SMTP (Xxx) - localhost"
In the interests of security I have changed the name of the second
account to "Xxx" and "xxxxxxxxxxxx" - but they are correct, I have
checked so many times :-)
The passwords must be OK - or I wouldn't be able to receive mail,
would I ??
