For many Hotmail users the extensions are now redundant. It does still have a place for those using a work computer where a corporate firewall may prevent access to the Hotmail POP and SMTP servers. Also for those who use folders on the Hotmail website and wish to download mails in those folders. I second your thanks to those who have made it possible to get mail in Thunderbird despite Hotmail doing their best to prevent it. For what it's worth SMTP port 25 didn't work for me when Hotmail enabled SMTP sending, I had to use port 587 with TLS.
