Two points here.
The original question referred to an error connecting to
pop.mail,yahoo.com. Anyone retrieving or attempting to retrieve mail
directly from a pop server isn't using the webmail extensions. The error
indicates that the questioner hasn't set his Yahoo account up in
Thunderbird correctly to use the extensions. This being so, the only way
he's going to get his Yahoo mail in TB is to correct this, either by
starting from scratch or by editing settings in his present account.
Your problem is quite different in that you had a previously functioning
Yahoo webmail account which suddenly stopped working. As you surmise,
this is most likely due to changes that Yahoo have made, not an error in
your account settings. It may be that Yahoo is presenting the extension
with an information page or some extra security questions (remember, the
extension emulates a browser session at the Yahoo website in order to
retrieve your mails). If this is happening, visiting the Yahoo mail
website yourself and clearing any information or extra security pages
will resolve the issue. On the other hand, if Yahoo have changed the
website in a way that breaks the extension, you can only wait for an
update to the extension. If requested you can help the Webmail Author
update the extension by sending the log files.

I've not had any trouble with Webmail for quite a while, but last
month I started getting this same RFC error, except for
login.yahoo.com. I'm using TB 3.1.3, Webmail 1.3.9, Webmail-Yahoo
1.4.7.
login.yahoo.com : server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555
There is another error which sometimes accompanies the above error:
YahooPOPBETA.js: loginHandler : Exception : TypeError.
Error message: mainObject.m_aLoginForm[0].match(patternYahooSpanURI)
is null
399
I get the same errors in Windows and Mac OS X.
I haven't changed any of my TB or Webmail settings for over a year,
and yet Webmail stopped working, so something outside of my control
clearly changed. Therefore I fail to see how recreating my Yahoo
account is an appropriate solution. Please advise.
Thanks,
John

You're not using the extension, you're trying to use Yahoo's POP
server, which you're not allowed to use unless you pay Yahoo.
You could try deleting the Yahoo account that you have set up in
Thunderbird, and then creating a new account in TB. This time, though,
when TB asks you what type of account, select "webmail" not POP.
For Thunderbird 2 you can use the instructions here
<http://webmail.mozdev.org/setup.html>. Thunderbird 3 helpfully tries to
set up the account as a POP account and looks up the settings for you
(I've just tried with mine!). Unfortunately the automatic settings are
wrong for use with the extensions. Set the account up manually using the
settings on the instructions for TB2. You may even be able to edit the
settings for the account you already have set up, but it'sprobably
easier to delete and start from scratch.
