Dunno. Much more likely just a broader culture specific thing of long-standing in the cultures affected with panic, nothing to do with "alternatives". FWIW in Italy, where I live in the maelstrom I just went shopping. There are no shortages or panic buying. But I see in news reports the both parts of USA & parts of OZ went bonkers.
