Some time ago, I did TeamWork  at hoster. It has a TWTopListTheme [1],
which displays a tiddler in top of the main displayArea+sidebars.
Click the "TypeWithMe" button, and it will slide down the tiddlers
content. It would be possible, to use a similar mechanism for your
background main manu. If you click something, it closes the slider and
activates the needed tiddler. But the Slider is allway visible. So
there would be no need to close all tiddlers, to access the main menu.
