You could also do this using the first and last operators and lists, but once again it would be bulky and annoying. Have a field called numbers that contains '1 2 3 4 5... Up to 31 then use nested filters like this
<$list filter='[list[numbers]first[10]]'> <$list filter=' tag[sometag]date<currentTiddler>]'> </$list> </$list> this would list everything tagged with sometag that has a date field that contains a number less than or equal to 10. You could do a similar thing with letters.
