It's a neat approach. I'd still worry about backwards compatibility:
the DOM changes could break existing CSS rules, for example.

As it happens I'm also not really in favour of hiding the tiddler
lists. To me, they are a rather intrinsic part of the wiki experience
that TiddlyWiki offers. I appreciate that they are not always
relevant, but for people who want to share a TiddlyWiki without them
they are very easy to hide with a number of different approaches, all
of which are quite useful for a beginner to learn.

Even adding things to the "more" zone makes the toolbar more
complicated and harder to parse.

I think that the role of the core distribution of TiddlyWiki is to
provide a robust, minimal core of functionality. The choice what goes
into the core is oriented towards making it transparent and simple to
see how TiddlyWiki operates, and not towards trying to provide
everything that anyone might need. The beauty of TiddlyWiki is that
we've got resources like TiddlyTools to balance the minimal approach
of the core.

None of this is to suggest that TiddlyWiki shouldn't undergo radical
change, as long as the benefit in terms of features or ease of use is
great enough. The work on TiddlyWiki5 is currently stalled in favour
of working on TiddlySpace, but they both are significant
additions/changes to TiddlyWiki.

As discussed in another thread, I'm also keen to do a long overdue
overhaul of the content of tiddlywiki.com. Better instructions for how
to customise the toolbars would be exactly the sort of thing that we
should include.

Best wishes

Jeremy
