I don't know about TW5 but in TWc if you don't care about compatibility 
with other TiddlyWikis you could alter the formater itself.

AKA: Change "--" to "-s-"  (In TWC "--" = Strike) than you would be able to 
use -- with out doing anything.

However this will break your content if used/imported to a TiddlyWiki that 
dose not also have this change thereby use with caution.
