Am I the only one that thinks this is nasty and a big turn-off to
potential developers? I mean, I understand why it is done this way --
so that Linux distributions can build VNC against the same X11 codebase
as the regular X server, but it seems like we need to support some
"default" version of Xorg and make sure that the build is painless for
that version so that developers (like me) can easily get the code up and
running. I personally don't care what version of Xorg is used.
I agree with you; that's why I believe that it would be good if we could
ship a script like "build-xorg-git". But it needs to be adapted for Xorg
1.5.
Am I to understand from your response that you haven't seen this
before?
I have seen this and tons of other dependency errors... :-)
How do other people on this list normally build Xvnc?
Well, this is a new project, and my gut feeling is that probably not too
many people have actually tried to build Xvnc yet. But if you have a
modern Fedora system, you should be able to simply follow the instructions
in the README.
Most other people that has problems with all Xorg dependencies are
probably using the script on http://wiki.x.org/wiki/Development/git, or a
similiar one.
I don't
understand why it wouldn't be an easily reproducible process. The
README suggests building against a specific branch of Xorg (1.5), so one
would presume that the build works with that specific branch and has
been tested.
The problem is not building Xvnc - the problem is building Xorg. If you
have a working Xorg 1.5.X installation on your system, building Xvnc
should be fairly simple, following the README.
Can you perhaps try the build-xorg-git script, but change the git master
references so that the 1.5 branch is used instead? Perhaps that's all that
is necessary.
Best regards,
