Sure, I understand that tracking the old endpoints was grafted on arbitrarily 
and you're hesitant to do something so specific, rather than a general 
abstraction for telling the Lua code about deleted geometries.

So, I'm happy to revert to [this 
version](https://github.com/leijurv/osm2pgsql/blob/b0dd0994730a6b870ed7e5134b100dd808392ce6/src/gen/gen-grouped-linemerge.cpp),
 which only used regular tile expiry (and did not save line endpoints). Would 
that help?

Then I assume you would want me to set up a full planet db, and track 
osmchanges live, and report the performance? I'm willing to do that but I don't 
want to spend the time setting up a multi terabyte raid array (I have no single 
SSD that's large enough) if there is no chance of such a thing being merged.
