the bug is because of version detection. Debian and ubuntu package display a "null" for version. The perl script (tilesgen.pl) could provide an option for supporting this bug. according to this link : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pngnq/+bug/250835, the bug has been fixed in debian.
