I am, too. For an 8-bit solution, I heartily concur. The AVR series is broad and, indeed, the gcc/binutils support is decent. If you want/need 32-bits, IMNSHO, ARM is the best way to go for a highly-integrated solution. The Philips/NXP parts are quite good.
