For what ever reason I've always used a dry towel. I suspect it would also
do pretty well wet...

Actually, I'm happy to see that someone would try the interferometer 
method. I've never come around to it, but understood it's potential from 
reading Enrico's numerous papers on the subject.

The interferometric front-end is relative cheap for the performance you 
get. You get the sidebands fairly separated from carrier and gained up 
prior to hitting any mixer.
