Hi Edgardo,all,

the command to blank the display you can find:

http://cp.literature.agilent.com/litweb/pdf/53131-90044.pdf

page 3-36

Disable display:
:DISPlay:ENABle OFF (See Note below.)

Note: This value is not stored on Save and is not part of the non-volatile state.

Hope this command will be implemented in Timelab soon.

Dear Azelio, Tom, John and Luciano ( I hope I am not missing anybody),

Thank you all of you for your kind advise on this subject. I am sorry
I was unable to reply in a timely manner. I had to leave town for a
week for new IT business. I think I will start by dismantling the unit
display and test the tantalum capacitors as you mentioned. If I can
achieve success by doing this it is fine. Otherwise I could consider
using it as the GPIB workhorse as I just started to obtain my first
ADEV, MDEV and TDEV graphs with TimeLab and a Prologix adapter. May I
know the command for turning the display off via the GPIB port? That
is something nice for long periods of sampling.

A whole new world has just opened to me. Know I am starting to get
intimate with my frequency standards by knowing them in deep. If all
goes well I should start updating my wish list for a Wavecrest DTS
unit next year. For now I will squeeze every single Tau value from the
graphs using the 53132A.

Last but not least. If the display fades away I could eventually
consider buying a new one as the whole instrument is in pristine
condition and would be a shame to see it working without a brilliant
display.
Thank you for all your feedback.

Wishing you all a pleasant evening/morning.

Kind regards,

Edgardo Molina

Hi all,

to avoid more display "consumption" during long acquisitions, there is an HPIB command to blank the display on the counter. I have asked to KE5FX to add this feature in Timelab during the acquisition setup. Hope he have time to do this.

Two possibilities: Cathode poisoning or bad tantalum caps. I'm not
sure if "cathode poisoning" is really the correct term for this
effect, but it's similar. There have been a number of tutorials out
there about rejuvenating VF displays.

It appears that the military parts system has the EL displays listed
for replacement purposes.

Should the display prove to be beyond recovery it might be possible
to buy a new one. Now, the cost may be another matter ...

These are made by Noritake-Itron. The generic part number is
CP3033A, but it does not show up in their product line on their web
site. It might be worth contacting them to see if there's any
possibility of still getting them.

Searching for Itron CP3033A turns up some parts brokers that claim to
have access to 251 of them.
