Hi Folks,
the idea of a table showing which countries are networkwise near sounds
good to me.
For my installer I would do it this way:
If someone chooses de, I will add 0.,1.,2.de.pool.ntp.org as well as
0.nl.pool.org and 0.uk.pool.ntp.org . For nl and uk I will add the 0.
servers of the other two countries, so I get 5 servers for each of those
countries.
Bad luck for the US, I guess it would not make sense to add servers from
"nearby" countries as this big country has over 114 servers in the
us.pool.ntp.org group and only slightly more than ten others in North
America.
For you US guys I'd like to see a 3. and 4. entry ...
For me the main advantage of using geographically grouped regions is
that most users can easily identify the country they are located in, so
I'd propose to go on with the country-subdomains but would ask server
operators or users in countries with few or no pool servers to name
countries they have a good network connection with. As the example of
Europe shows, there are few "big internet transit" countries and almost
all other countries run a big cable to one or two of those.
So, maybe it would be more effective to include nl, uk and de servers in
the europe.pool.ntp.org group (maybe this could be adopted to Japan in
Asia?). Anyways, the US should provide more than 3 server entries, they
have plenty of them, all in one country code group.
Kind regards,
Heiko
